I love writing about the interactions between human and other worldly beings.
In my latest book a young lawyer interacts with a talking Cuban fly, a Santero, Goddess and a Haitian loa. Ghosts come back to haunt a character who has to reconcile the wrongs of the past with the present. I ask “What if” because these characters I have given life to (at least in my warped little mind) I ran into one when I was walking down the streets in Trenton, New Jersey what would I even say?
I see lawyers all the time…no big deal. I have a friend who is a priest of the Palo Mayombe who tells me the dead never stop talking to him and he must respond by talking to them through his caldero. Another dear friend was a priest with whom I had shared many deep conversations about Catholic mysteries. Another friend who speaks to those who have moved on through holding seances.
But what if I ran into a being spirit or otherwise that has seen a millennium, knows humanity better than me, can see the future and the past? I think I would be humbled….and terrified.
That is how the lead character, Garland Nowell feels when he meets Don Julio, a fast talking fly in need of a lawyer’s services. I think you will find Of Gods, Flies and Desperate Lawyer’s an enjoyable read in English or in Spanish.
