AML: Hey Vin, thanks for talking to me and thanks for doing the book cover. And I have to say you also did a terrific book cover for my short graphic novel Ceremonial Magic for Half Wits.
Tell me a little bit about yourself . How did you develop a love of art?
VL: I’ve always loved art. I was heavily influenced by comic books, cartoons and movies. Through reading and watching I gained a big interest in drawing and design and wanted to learn more. It also runs in the family. My mom was always amazing when it came to crafts and needlepoint and my dad had a deep love and knowledge of movies.
AML. Do you pattern your own artwork after any particular current artist?
VL: Yes. I’ve had some big inspirations throughout my life: Bruce Blitz, who created the show “Blitz on Cartooning”, showed me a lot of the basics and Bruce Timm who’s style of drawing I loved from watching shows such as Batman: The Animated Series and The Justice League. He was able to accomplish his idea from just drawing only a few lines. Others ofcourse include comic book artists, Jim Lee and Alex Ross whose dynamic style is famously recognizable.
AML: Did you doodle or like to draw when you were a child?
VL: Absolutely. I’d say around 5 years old is where I caught the “art bug”.
AML: Is there any kind of art you don’t like?
VL: Yes, I’m not a fan of Anime or the style of art seen on shows such as Dexter’s Laboratory or Power Puff Girls.
AML: What kind of things were going through your mind when you worked on the book cover for Of Gods, Flies and Desperate Lawyers?
VL: I was thinking how lucky I was to have contacted you at the right time. Who knew, 14 years later, we’d be collaborating on yet another great story.
AML: What kind of character do you think the protagonist Garland Nowell is?
VL: He’s an attorney who you start to feel sorry for and pity but quickly makes friends with someone unusual who shows him there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I like their chemistry.
AML: What kind of character do you think Don Julio the fly is?
VL: I saw him as very likable and funny. He really keeps you involved in the story. You understand his efforts and you root for him too.
AML: If you had a fantasy dream job in the art world, what would it be?
VL: Yes, I would always love to do something for Marvel or DC Comics. I’ve always loved those.
Great interview! Can’t wait for the English version of the book to come out.
